Portraits of doctoral candidatesMyo Thiri Kyaw

Dissertation title:

‘Development and verification of test methods for the evaluation of transparent coating systems’

Field of science:

Mechanical engineering and materials science

Explain the topic of your doctoral thesis in a few short, simple words

My research is focusing on developing on a new approach to test how long and well transparent protective coatings stay on metal surfaces. With the combination of electrical and optical responses of the coatings, it shall evaluate their strength in terms of its life time.

What excites you about your research topic?

The most exciting part of my research is the link between history and materials science. I had a chance to learn industrial heritage and history in extension with materials science’s materials and methods. The results shall lead to practical tools that help conservators monitor coatings directly on site - without having to remove samples or damage anything. This can help protecting heritage sites easier, safer, and more affordable.

What do you particularly appreciate about your doctorate at THGA?

The best thing of my doctorate studies at THGA is “Prof@THGA”. The program gives learning opportunities and chances to become a professor in the future. Moreover, I really appreciate the supportive environment at THGA. The close exchange with my supervisors and colleagues makes research feel less like working alone and more like building something meaningful together.
