What are preparatory courses?Prep courses

Preparatory courses are optional courses offered before the official start of studies. They help students refresh existing knowledge, close knowledge gaps, and make the transition into university studies easier.

At an engineering university in particular, many degree programs are based on mathematical, scientific, and technical fundamentals. For this reason, the preparatory courses review important school-level content in a clear and accessible way and provide opportunities to preactice it together.

Typical topics include, for example:

  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Basic Chemistry
  • Technical Understanding
  • Learning and Study Organization

Preparatory courses are especially aimed at:

  • First-year students
  • people who have been out of school for some time
  • working professionals or part-time students
  • anyone who would like to feel more confident before starting their studies

In addition to the academic content, preparatory courses also offer opportunity to:

  • make initial contact with fellow students
  • get to know the university
  • ask questions about studying, and
  • become familiar with digital systems and preocesses at and early stage.

Participation in preparatory courses is generally optional, but strongly recommended, as they can make the transition into university studies much easier.

How to participate

Most preparatory courses take place in person at THGA. An exeption are the two information sessions:

  • Start Check - Full-Time Bachelor's Programme
  • Start Check - Part-Time Bachelor's Programme | Masters' Programme

These sessions are offeres online via Zoom by the Central Student Advisory Service.

Participation in the preparatory courses is free of charge and voluntary for all first-year students at THGA. Registration is not required to take part in the courses.

The only exeption is the preparatory course in Technology, for which registration is required.

Please note:

All preparatoy courses are held in German. For detailed information please change the language setting to German at the top of the page.

An overview of the preparatory courses for the winter semester 2026/27, including all dates and times, will be available from August.

Building knowledge before you start studying

Knowledge in the STEM subjects, i.e. science. technology, engineering and maths, becomes increasingly important in both education and the world of work. But - what can you do if there are gaps and parents, siblings and friends cannot help? This is why we launched PepperMINT - our digital support and qualifikation courses for school kids and (future) students in their first semester. Please note: Courses are available only in German.
