Student Info

Dear students,

Welcome to the Georg Agricola University of Applied Sciences (THGA). On this page you will find information on the important topics you will encounter as a student.

Checklist Arrival

Here you will find a list of the most important things you should do after your arrival in Germany.

Flat

You will be accommodated in the student residence at Westhoffstr. 15. There are washing machines and dryers in the basement that you can use. You will need washing tokens (1 euro), which you can get from the machine to the right of the reception desk at the university. If you notice any damage in your flat, please report it immediately. You can use the form provided (Schadensmeldungen) and send it via email to: studiwohnen(at) dmt-lb.de.

Registration with the city

You must register with the city of Bochum for the duration of your stay. To do this, you will need an appointment to which you will be accompanied by one of our staff members.

Health insurance and bank account

You will need health insurance during your stay. There are a variety of insurers. The monthly premium is around 100 euros per month.

You will also need a bank account, as all deposits and withdrawals have to be made through it. Many banks offer free accounts for students.

Checklist after Arrival

Local Public Transport (ÖPNV)

Your student ID is valid as a ticket for local public transport in NRW for the entire semester. (You cannot use IC and ICE trains with it). The best way to find out about departure times is to look at the website or app of Deutsche Bahn or VRR. You can get to the university and the city centre of Bochum by underground (U-Bahn) line U35.

Bicycle rental

For short journeys, we recommend the use of bicycle rental stations. You can use the RevierRadStation tri-mobil (Herner Str.88), the MetropolRadRuhr station or the station of Nextbike.

Waste separation

Rubbish in Germany is separated. This is done according to the following criteria:

  •     Plastic (yellow bin)
  •     Organic waste (brown bin)
  •     Waste paper (blue bin or container)
  •     Residual waste (black bin)
  •     Waste glass: Glass is separated into white glass, brown glass and green glass and thrown into containers.

The nearest container for used glass is located in Westhoffstraße, directly opposite the student hall of residence.

Look for the returnable or non-returnable deposit symbol on bottles. You will be refunded the deposit when you return the bottle.

Emergency Checklist

In an emergency, you can reach the fire brigade and the ambulance service in Germany by calling 112 and the police by calling 110.
