A database for the applications of corrosion-inhibiting coatings on industrial heritageResearch Project
The project examines various examples of the specific technologies for the surface protection applied to industrial heritage objects made of ferrous metals. Based on good practice examples that have been implemented over a period of about 20 years, data sheets are developed as application guidelines for the corrosion protection of comparable conservation measures. The project draws on practical experience gained from conservation measures carried out by conservators and restorers, as well as on application-oriented research, in particular the materials science and chemical investigations conducted by THGA and the Deutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum. The good on-site applicability of the resulting guidelines is ensured throughout the project by intensive discussions with our network of associated experts. In the final third of the project, a conference with the character of a workshop will discuss the results before publication.

Objectives of the Project
- Establishing an online-accessible database on corrosion-inhibiting coatings —particularly transparent systems — well applicable for freely weathered industrial heritage objects made of ferrous metals
- Systematic documentation of approximately 30 products and case studies, consolidated into standardized data sheets for application scenarios, a planning aid (Excel spreadsheet), and an application guideline
- Supporting a well-founded, case-specific decision-making and providing easy access to data for planners, owners, heritage authorities, and SMEs.
